University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust, a leading university teaching hospital and research and development centre in the UK, has selected the complete Websense Essential Information Protection portfolio of products to create an integrated policy-based IT security platform to secure the integrity of patient data and valuable Intellectual Property (IP), and protect against Web 2.0 threats.

Offering a low total cost of ownership, the combined solution will enable UHB to address the access and movement of NHS patent records, identify and control the use of other confidential data including IP, manage dynamic Web 2.0 content and SSL traffic, scan for malcode in real-time, and block blended threats.

The solution, managed in conjunction with IT managed services and solutions provider 2e2, will be rolled out across the Trust’s 7,000 users and includes the Websense V10000 secure Web gateway appliance, Websense Web Security Gateway, Websense Email Security and Websense Data Security Suite.

“We recognised that with the rise of Web 2.0, that the threat landscape had changed and we needed a security platform in place that would not only protect against ingoing and outgoing Internet threats over Web and email, but would also help us to identify where our valuable information existed, set policy over who had access to that information and what they could do with it,” said Mohandeep Randhawa, Service Delivery Manager, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. “As an NHS Trust, we have to ensure that all valuable information, especially patient records, is handled securely.”

“Selecting a complete solution from trusted partners like Websense and 2e2 provides better visibility and management control and lower total cost of ownership,” continues Mohandeep Randhawa, Service Delivery Manager, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. “Implementation and operational costs will be brought down due to reduced complexity and training requirements, driving a lower administration overhead. Websense Essential Information Protection comprehensively addresses our security issues and we’re already seeing reduced administration, improved threat correlation and better management reporting.”

Websense Essential Information Protection provides integrated threat defense and powerful policy-based control over an organisation’s sensitive data. Websense Email Security provides comprehensive software based messaging security to manage inbound and outbound email threats. Websense Data Security discovers essential information throughout the enterprise network, monitors usage of this information, and protects against the inappropriate use of this information. The Websense V10000 is the industry’s first and only Web 2.0 early threat outbreak detection and prevention system, offering a single platform to classify dynamic Web content and to block malicious threats and malware distributed through use of dynamic Web 2.0 websites and applications. Websense Web Security Gateway prevents dynamic threats and ensures all content is appropriate and within policy by analyzing in real-time all web content, even if it is SSL encrypted, as it is requested by users.

"The challenge for organisations today is to empower employees to harness the enormous power of the Internet without compromising security controls, violating acceptable use policies or jeopardizing sensitive data,” said Mark Murtagh, Product Director EMEA &APAC, at Websense. “Traditional security solutions usually only see one part of the picture and often they cannot recognize content or context. Only Websense provides an integrated Web security, messaging security and data security solution to protect essential information and enable success in the Web 2.0 world.”

“The Websense Essential Information Protection solution provides increased threat correlation and protection from Web and email based threats,” concluded Stephen Chilton, Director of IT Services, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. “With an integrated security architecture we will be able to support our policy-based information strategy with a technology platform to enforce those policies across the enterprise.”

All Websense solutions are powered by the Websense ThreatSeeker™ Network which continuously monitors the Internet for changes and emerging threats. The resulting intelligence is incorporated in real-time into the company's Web, data and email security solutions. As a result, Websense solutions adapt to the rapidly changing Internet threat environment at speeds not possible by traditional security solutions.
