(09/04/2009)
G4S Events successfully supplied security support for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to assist the Metropolitan Police in the build-up to, and throughout, the recent G20 Summit of Heads of State, Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors on 2 April 2009. The company was also employed by HM Treasury to assist Sussex Police secure the G20 Finance Ministers Conference which took place in mid-March in Horsham, West Sussex.
Over 500 expert personnel from G4S’s specialist Events division worked in partnership with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Met Police, and the management of ExCel to develop and deploy a range of specialist security services during the Summit.
Prior to the Summit at the ExCel Centre, G4S assisted the police in securing the venue before the police search and seal operation commenced. During the event period G4S officers provided a range of security and stewarding services at the Centre, including access control, static guarding, escorting searched vehicles and maintaining an inner security cordon inside the ExCel Centre and the main press, delegation and Leaders event halls.
*Mark Hamilton, Managing Director, G4S Events said “This was a multi-faceted operation for us and involved the deployment of specialist officers from across our business to ensure that police resources could be deployed effectively and not diverted from other critical operations. Our experience of providing security at a range of high profile and sensitive events ensured that we were able to work closely with the Met, the FCO and ExCel to ensure that this significant Summit took place without incident.”
In addition to its work at the ExCel Centre, officers from G4S Aviation Services were deployed on behalf of BAA to conduct ‘central search’ security screening for G20 delegates flying out of Gatwick Airport, and G4S also provided security services to the G20 Finance Ministers Conference which took place between 13 – 15 March 2009 in West Sussex.
G4S secures a wide range of high profile events such as the Labour Party Conference, The Grand National, The Championships at Wimbledon and venues such as Ibrox football stadium.
