Protecting lone workers by satellite tracking their mobile devices
(26/01/2009)
VeriLocation has launched a new personal tracking service to help protect lone workers by satellite tracking their mobile devices. The launch means businesses can now track the location of devices such as PDAs – and staff who carry them – anywhere in the world. And that means staff can be protected without any need to invest in expensive technology.
VeriLocation’s Andrew Overton said: “If you have staff who are always on the road or work unusual hours, this is a guarantee that their location can be traced if there is a problem. But there’s no investment in hardware needed, as it will work on any mobile device that has a GPS chip. That’s the majority of devices used by businesses in the last few years.”
VeriLocation’s personal tracking software communicates the position of the mobile device through the GPRS data network the device normally uses to receive and send emails. Back at the office, information on the location of devices is accessed through a normal internet browser.
In addition to personal tracking for safety, the location information can be used to improve business operations. For example the business can be alerted when the worker arrives at specific locations, and mileage claims can be generated automatically saving hours of paperwork.
Andrew added: “You just set up an account, download the software onto the device and then access the location information immediately through the VeriLocation website. You can do virtually anything with it including tracking where staff are now in real time, where they have been, and even view a device’s location on a 3D map.”
There are no “Big Brother” concerns with VeriLocation’s personal tracking, as the software can be clearly seen and switched off by the device user.
VeriLocation trialled personal tracking of devices last year, when it gave devices to two celebrities taking part in a charity cycle ride for Sport Relief. The public used the internet to track the location and progress of football legend Alan Shearer and TV presenter Adrian Chiles.
A two week free trial is available.
