Interactive CCTV for university hospital training

A North East based surveillance specialist has helped to advance the training at a university hospital thanks to its CCTV systems. 2020 Vision, based in North Shields, has just completed work on a new system at the University Hospital of North Tees which will see the hospital gain one of the best training systems in the country.

The system, which has been installed in the endoscopy unit, is the first of its kind for hospital. The camera system will provide a unique training aid which will allow students to view live endoscopy operations from a separate training room and will also allow them to speak to those in the theatres through high-tech microphones. 2020 Vision has previously completed a similar project at Hull Royal Infirmary.

The University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton on Tees awarded 2020 Vision the contract following a competitive tender process.

2020 Vision was chosen due to its reputation in the industry as well as because its cutting edge solution allows multiple images to be viewed from the theatres at any one time. The system will prove vital for teaching future generations of doctors and nurses at the hospital.

The advanced system has been installed in all four theatres in the endoscopy unit, with a total of four cameras making up the sophisticated interactive CCTV as well as being supported by modern microphone and digital recording equipment.

Peter Houlis, managing director of 2020 Vision, said: “We’ve worked with hospitals for many years now and pride ourselves on our ability to deliver to the needs of our clients. Providing training equipment of this nature is not our first and we certainly hope it won’t be our last!”

The facility will provide a perfect training environment, and with the addition of the specialist CCTV system enable remote live viewing and analysis, recording and detailed review and re production of training sessions onto CD.

The University Hospital of North Tees is managed by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. It is one of two hospitals in the trust which provides hospital based care to more than 400,000 people living in Stockton on Tees, Hartlepool, East Durham and parts of Sedgefield.

Commenting on the unique contract consultant physician Dr Matt Rutter, who is the lead clinician for endoscopy at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Training tomorrow's doctors and endoscopy specialists is a vital part of what we do here in the trust. This system allows us to have a live link with students in a separate room. It's far less intrusive than having students in the room and it is quickly becoming an important tool in our training toolkit.

"2020 Vision has provided us with a superb state of the art endoscopy training facility. We asked for a flexible, simple to use, high tech solution and they delivered. I'm absolutely delighted."
