LEGIC Identsystems Ltd has entered into a licence agreement with ID specialist Databac Group to manufacture contactless smart cards incorporating its technologies. As the local British manufacturer of plain and bespoke LEGIC cards, Databac will be able to respond to local demand, while competitively servicing a global client base from its offices in the UK and Spain.

Dr Otto Eggimann, vice-president sales & business development of LEGIC said: "There is a large LEGIC customer base on the British Isles and a rapidly-growing LEGIC market in Spain. As a licensed card manufacturing partner with presence in both countries, Databac is uniquely placed to service these two key territories."

LEGIC cards comprise highly-secure 13.56 MHz read/write technology. Unlike other contactless technologies which use passwords, LEGIC cards can only be encrypted using a unique master token, linking them directly to the readers used.

Databac Group managing director Charles Balcomb said: "Databac has a 38 year track record in high-tech card manufacture, particularly for multiple applications, and here we feel a real synergy with LEGIC. Besides its secure encryption technique, the impressive capacity to combine up to 127 applications in a single credential is one of the factors that compelled us to seek this licence agreement."

LEGIC cards can be programmed for use with a large number of systems, from different vendors. Functionality is wide-ranging and can include access control, time & attendance, loyalty, e-ticketing, membership, transport, cashless vending, data collection, PC log-on, parking and more.

Databac is able to offer real choice in the make-up of LEGIC cards in terms of materials, printing, encoding and security options. Cards can be constructed from PVC, PET, ABS, polycarbonate or a composite, for different levels of price/performance. Databac can preprint them with corporate imagery and personalise them for each wearer. A host of security features can be added such as customised holograms, UV printing and bank-note style background patterns.

Databac branded card products are being developed to include LEGIC technology.

Databac's Dataimage ID software will be available for desktop personalisation and encoding of LEGIC cards.
