Balancing Data Security, Integrity and Accessibility
(06/11/2008)
BeCrypt believes that most staff currently banned from working outside of secured locations would be able to resume off-site working if the right security products were implemented. In its new white paper ‘Data Handling – A practical Guide’ BeCrypt explains how Government organisations and their business partners can roll out centrally managed data security solutions that are transparent to the user, so will not impact on business productivity.
BeCrypt has recently announced new products that will enable public sector organisations to comply with the latest Data Handling recommendations laid out in three separate reports. BeCrypt Client, which is currently going through CESG CAPS approval is BeCrypt’s CD/USB media/file encryption solution. FIPS 140-2 approval is expected in the third quarter of 2008. In addition, BeCrypt Trusted Client™, its secure remote working solution that is carried on a USB stick is also expected to gain CESG CAPS approval soon.
Marc Hocking, Chief Technology Officer at BeCrypt said, “Whilst it is of the utmost importance that personally identifiable data held by public bodies is securely protected, it is equally important to be able to share data so that better and more personalised services can be delivered to citizens. At BeCrypt we understand the delicate Information Assurance balancing act between Security, Integrity and Accessibility. We have worked closely with the Cabinet Office and CESG to develop products that provide robust security with innovative and flexible features that ensure that people protect data, with minimal or no impact on productivity.”
BeCrypt Client with CD, USB media and flash file encryption extends BeCrypt’s range to ensure the integrity of data and enable its secure sharing with authorised third parties, and has been developed in direct response to the new Government requirements for highly secure data handling procedures. BeCrypt Client operates with a ‘zero footprint’ on the device itself so that authorised recipients can access data without needing BeCrypt software installed, they simply need to successfully complete the authentication process.
Along with the rest of its suite of encryption products, BeCrypt offers solutions that provide protection for data at rest on laptops, desktops and USB devices suitable for Impact Levels 1 to 4 and Impact Level 5 (short term), which will enable Government departments, and the organisations that work with the departments, to comply with the latest Data Handling requirements in a way that is transparent to staff and enables them to resume flexible and mobile working without impact on day to day business operations.
Initially BeCrypt Client will provide CD, USB media and file encryption as a stand alone solution. However, subsequent versions will see BeCrypt Client develop into a unified, policy based, client side data security solution with a range of enterprise management options. BeCrypt Client will include data encryption (using FIPS libraries for commercial installations and Impact Levels 2 and below, CAPS approved DISK Protect Baseline for Impact Level 3 and CAPS approved DISK Protect Enhanced for Impact Level 4 and 5 short term), port control/end point security, and removable media encryption (for CDs, DVDs and USB devices).
A technical preview of BeCrypt Client and the full version of BeCrypt Trusted Clientv2 are now available for evaluation with FIPS libraries. They will be fully upgradeable to the CAPS approved version when available.
