During winter, cameras struggle to capture an image without sufficient light
(01/12/2006)
Most crime takes place under the cover of darkness, and during winter, light levels can drop as early as 4pm, leaving surveillance systems vulnerable from mid-afternoon onwards. As light levels drop, cameras will struggle to capture an image and without sufficient light, picture quality can seriously deteriorate.
An awareness campaign throughout ADI-GARDINER’s nationwide branch network is switching installers on to the need to give greater consideration to illumination throughout the dark winter nights.
As one of the manufacturers supplied by ADI-GARDINER, Derwent’s awareness that many CCTV cameras fail to capture useable images due to poor illumination has created a series of long life halogen and LED based Infra-Red illuminators and accessories for CCTV. The Dark Nights Campaign has been hammering home to the industry the importance of specifying and installing the correct type of lighting.
Derwent’s Infra-Red lamps are specifically designed to work with the surveillance camera, maximising its effectiveness and providing powerful, even-illumination. Without IR, dark night-time scenes remain dark to CCTV cameras, images suffer from shadows, signal noise and loss of focus.
“Many CCTV cameras installed during the light summer months will fail when they come up against the challenges of dark winter conditions,” says Linda Williams, Derwent’s UK Sales Manager. “The message is clear - without light there can be no picture. Adding Derwent lamps to an existing system can bring it alive again, ensuring it delivers high-resolution surveillance on a true 24 hour basis.”
To tie in with the launch of the Dark Nights Campaign, Derwent is also releasing an update to its Night-time Handbook, essential reading for anyone involved in installing or specifying CCTV systems.
