SecurStore Online Data Backup Ensures Safe Retrieval of London Medical’s Patient Records in Case of Disaster
(23/06/2008)
SecurStore has announced it is providing London Medical with its online data backup services through Fifosys, a consultancy and IT systems development company. Fifosys represents the IT department of the Marylebone High Street clinic, which has an international reputation as a centre of excellence for heart disease prevention, diabetes, endocrinology and retinal diseases.
It is vital that the medical data is securely backed up online and offsite everyday, so that in the case of a systems failure or damage to the clinic itself, all the data can be quickly retrieved online from any location.
The information London Medical stores is regularly audited, such as patient details, medical records and blood tests. Furthermore, should any of this data be lost, any blood tests and other processes would have to be repeated for long term patients, wasting time for both London Medical and the patients. It is therefore imperative that this data is not only securely stored, but that it is also stored and can be retrieved offsite in case of a systems failure.
London Medical’s Marketing Manager, Stephanie Miller, said: “We needed to be able to quickly retrieve any lost data or in the event that a patient record were to be deleted in error, have reassurance that it could be recovered both quickly and efficiently with the help of the Fifosys engineer using the SecurStore system. The SecurStore solution that Fifosys sourced and implemented for us was exactly what we needed and I now feel confident that all of our data is constantly protected; even if our systems go down or the clinic has a fire or flood, I know that we can still get the data back. Our patients’ data is the lifeblood of London Medical and it is a priority for us to protect it.”
London Medical is also a victim of today’s common problem for businesses: data growth and the constant need to increase data storage space. Its data is growing rapidly and the previous tape-based solution could not cope with this, having reached capacity at 300 GB of data. Therefore, Fifosys arranged for London Medical to switch to online backup, rather than invest heavily by increasing the two existing tape drives to four, which again would reach capacity at some point, unlike scalable online backup solutions.
Mitesh Patel, Managing Director of Fifosys, said: “I chose the SecurStore solution for London Medical primarily because the online nature of its backup allows us to protect the data on a daily basis, so it is stored offsite in case of a disaster and can be retrieved within minutes. Secondly, the solution is scalable, which fits in with the fast rate at which the data storage needs are increasing at the clinic.”
Alexander Eiríksson, Chief Operating Officer of SecurStore, said: “It is essential for businesses that store highly sensitive and critical data, such as London Medical, that they use online backup solutions, which are much more reliable and scalable than the error-prone tape-based systems. Fifosys exemplifies the best in IT services for clients – its priority is in maintaining clients’ business continuity and protecting their digital data. This requires a robust IT system and an equally robust data protection solution, should the IT system ever fail.”
SecurStore is suitable for businesses that need to protect data from a few gigabytes to terabytes. The service ensures that any data held on PCs, file servers and application/database servers is securely backed up. SecurStore supports many platforms including Windows NT/2000/2003/XP along with AS-400 iSeries, Unix and Linux. SecurStore can also protect a wide range of databases including Oracle, SQL, Exchange, Lotus Notes and DB2.
