Sunderland AFC boosts network defence with RandomStorm
(07/04/2008)
Sunderland AFC like all the major football clubs has invested heavily in developing a Website as a critical component of its commercial operations. Fans are encouraged to visit the site to book and pay for match and season tickets as well shop for their replica shirts, posters and other club merchandise. In addition to the club’s Website Sunderland also operates a sophisticated back office network including the latest VoIP phone system , all of which could lead to a security problem if not routinely maintained.
Sunderland Association Football Club is the latest high profile sporting organisation to sign up to RandomStorm’s online security management service in as many weeks. The sporting trend started at the beginning of March with the company adding both Reading FC and the Professional Golfers Association to its rapidly growing list of client companies.
Maintaining strong network defences is a major concern for any organisation, with routine scanning for vulnerabilities becoming a standard task for IT managers. For businesses that offer card payments facilities scanning is a key requirement as part of their agreement with the banks and card issuers, without which they could have the facility withdrawn.
“Running a Premier League football club is like any other multi-million pound business and we have a duty of care to ensure that private and confidential data held on our networks is fully protected” commented Roger Whitehill, Sunderland’s Business Management Accountant.
“Using the RandomStorm scanning service means we can schedule scans to run at regular intervals and receive alerts if there are any problems that need fixing in time to prevent a security breach. The alternative would have been to employ a specialist security person with all the costs that would have entailed.”
