Comodo secures the Obama'08 website and encrypts sensitive data
(27/03/2008)
The Obama'08 campaign has selected Comodo to secure the Obama'08 website with Comodo SSL certificates. The Obama'08 site has deployed Comodo InstantSSL certificates to provide online contributors reassurance that their information is encrypted and secure. The Comodo seal on the site provides additional visual confirmation to online visitors that the site can be trusted.
The need for increased vigilance in site security for government agencies, not for profit organizations and political campaigns is acute because fraudsters pretending to be these types of organizations have been steadily and alarmingly increasing since 2006.
A new report entitled, "Online Financial Fraud and Identity Theft Report," discloses that in 2007, over 900 new brands were first time targets of phishing attacks. This is over a 100 percent increase in new phishing targets compared to 2005 and 2006 combined. Criminals often focused their attacks on specific sites that have high traffic spikes, such as the IRS during critical tax season, charity sites responding to a catastrophe, or political/ "action committee" sites during a presidential election year.
To combat this growing "trust" threat, the Obama'08 site has deployed Comodo's InstantSSL certificate which will help prevent contributors' sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands. Further, the Obama'08 site displays the Comodo site seal, a highly valued trust mark recognized by over 100 million people who associate the Comodo brand with security. This brand recognition provides further credibility that the Obama'08 site can be trusted as secure.
"Throughout 2007 we saw a significant increase in the number of fraudsters, their level of sophistication, and the new segments they target." said Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO and Chief Security Architect of Comodo. "As we look to 2008, we fully expect to see an increase in complexity of phishing and malware attacks focusing on the political arena as this represents new revenue potential for the criminals. We will continue to support all political campaigns and candidates to ensure that all sites where individuals can contribute to political candidates can be trusted to be secure."
