Red Devil Storage adopts Peoplesafe lone worker device
(12/03/2008)
Since it established its first store in Kennington, South East London in 1998, Red Devil Storage, a storage facilities company in London and SE England, has expanded and now has outlets in Aylesbury and Folkestone offering storage facilities to businesses, retailers and domestic customers. Employees often work alone and in the past have reported instances of attack and verbal abuse.
Red Devil Storage has adopted Rocksure System’s Peoplesafe lone worker device to enable its store managers and assistant mangers to participate fully in managing their own safety. Peoplesafe enables employees to raise the alarm at the touch of a button if they are attacked or taken ill.
Looking for a way of providing its employees with the ability to assess risk and discreetly raise an alarm if threatened, Red Devil Storage decided to conduct a trial of the Peoplesafe package which also includes SIM and inclusive airtime, user training, 24 hour manned monitoring and pre & post sale customer support. Following a successful trial, Red Devil Storage purchased Peoplesafe units, which are now pooled for use by lone workers. Feedback from staff has been very positive who have seen the introduction of Peoplesafe as an improvement in their safety procedures.
When Red Devil Storage’s associate company Pure Parking had an incident whereby an employee collapsed and was unable to reach the phone to raise the alarm, Pure Parking also decided to purchase Peoplesafe for staff at its Car Park at Riverside West near Wandsworth. The fully attended car park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year.
“The introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act in April has further underlined the need for companies to adhere to current health and safety legislation to protect their employees whilst at work, which includes those working alone”, says Ian Johannessen, Managing Director of Rocksure Systems. “Red Devil Storage was looking for a system whereby employees could discreetly raise the alarm if threatened by an abusive customer or thief. Peoplesafe fitted their requirements exactly”.
When an employee feels they are entering a hazardous situation, they press the ‘checking in’ button, which notifies Rocksure’s control centre. In this way, the control centre is able to observe the wearer’s movements and raise the alarm if the ‘checking in’ button is not cancelled within a predetermined period. If the red alert is pressed, this instigates a set protocol that allows the control centre to assess the need for help and call the police if necessary. The record made of an incident can also help in prosecution of people who verbally or even physically abuse lone workers.
Rocksure Systems is also supplying Peoplesafe service to a spectrum of other markets. These include retail workers, security organisations, sales staff, financial advisors, estate agents and maintenance staff.
