Luton Borough Council fights anti-social behaviour with intelligent CCTV technology from Viseum
(26/10/2006)
Luton Borough Council is fighting anti-social behaviour, using CCTV technology from Viseum UK. Over the last year, Viseum CCTV technology has been effectively monitoring some of Luton’s high-rise housing estates to help create a safer neighbourhood for the local residents.
Awareness of this hi-tech CCTV system has steadily increased in the community providing an effective long term deterrent against all types of crime. The moving cameras visibly home in on potential crime, so perpetrators are aware that there are cameras watching them, proving an excellent deterrent. Local residents have stated that since installation of this new system there has been a noticeable reduction in the area’s crime. Luton Borough Council’s CCTV department has confirmed that the recorded images are extremely useful in a number of ways, and operators of Viseum’s system in the CCTV control centre found the system easy to use.
Viseum’s latest “Virtual Operator” system uses multiple cameras that see and record all around them in line of sight and then automatically control moving pan tilt and zoom cameras to capture close-up evidence of crime. It does this continuously 24 hours a day and can even detect incidents too far away for the naked eye to recognize. In short this system captures evidence which without the technology would be missed.
Viseum’s recorded evidence is reviewed by local police to assist in intelligence gathering and the investigation of crimes, including anti-social behaviour. The system is very easy to use; it sees everything at once and records exactly what happens all around it all the time. This provides its users with information on precisely what happened in an incident and the record of who was involved as well as who witnessed it. Since the new system was installed nearly a year ago, it has recorded crucial close-up evidence of four serious crimes and also a series of incidents of anti-social behaviour in the Hockwell Ring area that led to action against the perpetrators.
Stuart Thompson, Managing Director, Viseum, said, “From catching evidence of vandalism to break-ins, it is already proven that Viseum’s technology will be of great value in the fight against anti-social behaviour throughout Great Britain. Viseum’s technology was produced so that everyone can live and work safer from crime. The need for Viseum in this way makes it a necessary and low cost solution that everyone can benefit from.”
