Global Secure Systems (GSS) has warned companies of the need to protect their Web sites following the hacking of the Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko web site.

The Eurasian Youth Union, whose leader is banned from the Ukraine, claimed to have hacked into the official website of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in a retaliation cyber attack. The president's press office said it had registered 18,000 separate cyber attacks against the website

"The EYU claim the hack was retaliation for their own Web site being attacked by the Ukrainian authorities. Whatever the reason, it highlights the fact that a sustained attack by determined hackers can only be stopped using a carefully planned security strategy," said David Hobson, the firm's managing director.

"We advise clients to install the latest Web site security software, as well as go down the route of Web site diversity, arranging Internet connections with more than one Internet service provider," he added.

According to Hobson, this helps to prevent distributed denial of service attacks, as well as allowing a Web site to be quickly brought back online in the event that the Web server(s) are successfully hacked into.

"No Web sites are truly 100 per cent proof against determined hackers, but we can help minimise the risk for clients, as well as speed up the rate at which a site can return to normal, by advising them of the best strategy for protection and connection to the Internet," he explained.
