OCS Security monitors BP vehicles at Coryton oil terminal
(23/10/2007)
The largest road distribution oil terminal in Western Europe - at Coryton on the Thames Estuary - is benefiting from advanced security measures based on the automatic recognition of the BP oil tanker number plates entering the site.
The system has been installed by OCS Security. It is monitoring the movements of BP vehicles every day which call at the terminal to collect sufficient fuel to meet the needs of more than 20% of UK forecourt demand.
The Coryton site produces petrol and diesel including the new ‘cleaner’ fuels, aviation fuels, liquefied petroleum gas, fuel oils and bitumen. It is now owned by Petroplus AG, the largest independent refiner and wholesaler of petroleum products in Europe, following its acquisition of the refinery from BP in June this year.
Using image recognition and logging techniques, the system is based on pre-booked road tankers being logged into the software before their scheduled arrival. When a vehicle arrives and the control room needs to speak to the driver, the system identifies the number plate and reconciles this with the data for expected arrivals. A large dot matrix sign located on the side of the road is then activated showing the vehicle registration number and advising the driver of that vehicle to report to the control room.
Data is recorded in video format and can be retained for later examination. The system works efficiently for commercial vehicles and private cars and has also been installed to monitor and record vehicle movements in a major hotel at Heathrow and at Thorpe Park which is one of the countries largest theme parks.
Announcing the contract success, OCS Security managing director, Richard Fenton-Jones said, “We have provided a tailored solution for BP to meet a specific requirement using high-technology software and hardware which is able to cope with a high throughput of vehicles at this very busy oil terminal.”
Group chief executive Chris Cracknell said, “Advanced security is crucial at sites such as this which provide essential supplies for the consumer, commerce and industry. Our security division has all the expertise need to recommend a site-based solution regardless of the size of the operation.”
