With a recent increase in war, natural disasters and terrorism, many in the emergency response industry have been stressing proper preparation and planning. In the United States, hurricane fears, flooding and terror suspect arrests have all underscored the importance of disaster readiness for both government organizations and private citizens.

As these threats persist, a company based in northern Ohio is anticipating their newly designed survival units will assist agencies in the event of disaster on American soil. The Disaster Reconnaissance System (DRS), manufactured by Campa USA, is a mobile, all terrain trailer that can provide assistance to emergency management personnel and those needing a self contained living unit in a time of crisis.

“The DRS was designed with the emergency response sector in mind. However, it can be used in many different ways,” said Chris Cole, president and founder of Campa USA.

The system, made of stainless steel, can be equipped with features such as a water purification system, 12-volt electrical unit, generator, kitchen and cooking areas, sleeping quarters, solar panels, hot water shower system, compressor, two 22 gallon water tanks, refrigerator, two 10 lb. propane tanks, large storage bins, fluid pump and hand sink.

Cole contends the mobility of the system is a key component that makes it so attractive to emergency management officials. “Often times, there is a communication breakdown between personnel in the field and emergency operation centers,” he said. “Because our units are so mobile, officials will be able to relay critical information from hard-to-reach areas. The DRS can be hooked up to a standard trailer hitch and is highly versatile. It will potentially save lives and that’s what it’s all about”.

The unit is similar to Campa’s ATT system, which was originally designed for camping and outdoor enthusiasts. However, because of recent disaster related events, the company realized the need for a similar product within the emergency response industry.

In addition to disaster response and recovery, the DRS units can also be used for situations such as border control, temporary housing, and lengthy hostage negotiations.
