ASSAULTS ON RAIL STAFF have soared as a result of public anger over problems with Britain's rail network.

At yesterday's Railtrack shareholders meeting, new chairman John Robinson said that the number of attacks on staff had dramatically increased after the Hatfield train crash last October. Robinson told shareholders that front line rail staff have had to face the wrath of passengers angry over train delays.

The Times reported that a Health and Safety Executive report, to be published in September, will show a huge rise in assaults. This year there were an estimated 460 serious attacks on rail staff, a 21% increase on the previous year when there were 379 attacks, and a 72% increase compared to five years ago.

Earlier this month, the Government published a draft policy statement on Passenger Rail Franchising. In the statement, existing rail franchises were called on to improve security by installing more CCTV at stations and on trains and by increasing staff presence at stations. Franchises were also urged to gain Secure Stations accreditation for rail stations.
