E-learning leading to formal Health and Safety Risk Assessment Qualifications now available from the British Safety Council
A new set of e-learning courses that provide delegates with the knowledge required to conduct or review health and safety risk assessments have been launched by the British Safety Council.
The e-learning courses can be used by employers in all sectors of business and industry to provide managers, supervisors and team leaders with a thorough understanding of how to carry out both general health and safety risk assessments and specific assessments for fire safety, manual handling, display screen equipment and the control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH).
Upon completion of each course, delegates carry out an online risk assessment task linked to their workplace, and, subject to approval by an independent examiner, achieve a BSC Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment. This is a formal qualification accredited by Ofqual, the government-appointed qualifications regulator.
John Phillips, director of qualifications and standards at the British Safety Council, said: “Effective risk assessments are the cornerstone of good health and safety in the workplace, allowing employers to identify hazards and decide on the best ways of eliminating or controlling the risk of harm and accidents.
“These new e-learning courses are fully interactive, teaching the essential stages in the risk assessment process. They are also flexible, since risk assessors can study at a time and place that suits both them and their employer without the need to attend face-to-face, classroom training.”
The e-learning courses have been developed in line with Health and Safety Executive guidance on risk assessment and feature a risk assessment ‘simulation’ with voiceover. This provides advice on how to complete the online risk assessment task required to pass the qualification.
The Level 2 e-learning courses cost £98 + VAT (including qualification assessment fee) and discounts are available for volume purchases.

How it works
The e-learning option is available for the following British Safety Council Level 2 Risk Assessment qualifications:
- BSC Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment
- BSC Level 2 Award in COSHH Risk Assessment
- BSC Level 2 Award in DSE Risk Assessment
- BSC Level 2 Award in Fire Risk Assessment
- BSC Level 2 Award in Manual Handling Risk Assessment.
To deliver the Level 2 e-learning, employers or training providers must first pay registration fees to become a British Safety Council approved centre and to deliver the Level 2 Risk Assessment qualifications of their choice. They then purchase the required number of e-learning courses. Upon completion of the course, delegates undertake an online risk assessment task linked to their workplace which is marked by an independent examiner. The results are issued online within 20 days of submission, and, if successful, the learner receives their Level 2 qualification certificate by post shortly afterwards.
After registering as an approved centre and purchasing approval for the Level 2 Risk Assessment qualifications of their choice, employers also receive a CD of tutor and learning materials that can be used to provide face-to-face tuition if required.
Private delegates (individuals) can purchase a single Level 2 Risk Assessment e-learning course and assessment without registering as an approved centre.
