The number of Cash and Valuables in Transit robberies is increasing

While other categories of reported serious and violent crime have been declining, the number of Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT) robberies is increasing. The requirement for retailers to license in-house security guards would only add unnecessary costs and bureaucracy

The SIA currently licenses guards employed by security firms. Its investigation considered whether there was a case for extending licensing to in-house guards. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has announced that it did not find evidence of risk or threat to public protection to justify the Government introducing regulation for in-house licensing. Retail crime reduction could be undermined by economic slowdown

The latest British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) Retail Crime Survey 2008 shows numbers of customer thefts down 26 per cent in the year to April but the survey still recorded a third of a million shoplifting offences - that is one every 90 seconds. Employee theft fell 56 per cent in the year to April. Alarming rise in violence aimed at shop workers

The value of goods stolen from shops is at a ten year high and violent acts against retail staff have risen 50 per cent in a year according to the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) 2007 Retail Crime Survey.
